Roses Are Red - Analysis
In this student film the titles are cleverly shown to the audience by putting them onto objects that are seen in the opening. The distribution company poster 'Fox Searchlight' is on the bedroom wall of a teenage girl as a poster, this connotes that the girl is a teenager because she has posters over her wall which stereotypically many teenage girls do.
When the camera tilts down to see the note book and paints the production company comes up on the notepad. The text to the production company looks hand drawn with drawings around it, this suggests the film is a teen movie created by this production company as it many teenage girls draw meaningless drawings on notepads when they are board.
The titles made with makeup such as who the film is by and some of the cast names where integrated very well and were clear to see. The emphasis of makeup connotes that the main character is a girl and a teenager due to the style of text created with the makeup.
The title name 'Roses Are Red' is in red lipstick written on the mirror. This connoted the film is a love story. As the title is lipstick it also shows the stereotypical teenage love story as people would not often expect an adult to write in lipstick.
There is a good over the shoulder shot so that you can see the girl putting her makeup on which connotes she is getting ready to go out. This enables the viewer to see the photos of her and a boy which are on the mirror. As there are six photos of her and this boy on her mirror it connotes that he will also be a main character in the film and suggests they may be in a relationship together which also makes the audience aware that the film is a romance film. The title also connotes that the film is a romance film due to it being from a historic romance poem.
There is a shot of the computer with text on it but the text is completely blurry. This is confusing for the viewer because that the whole shot is on this computer which has no meaning in the opening if the viewer cannot see what is on there. Unfortunately there is also a blurred view of the title 'costumer by' which means the audience cannot read all the credits that are there fore them to see.
There is non-diegetic background music. This is upbeat, fast paced music which connotes to the audience that it is a good love story and happy. This is played throughout the scene filmed in her bedroom however, there is a cut from the bedroom to the outside of the girls house where the music just stops with no gradual fade and a voiceover starts to play saying 'he's just using you'. This is confusing for the viewer to whether the story is a good or a bad love story. The cut from the bedroom to outside the door is also bad editing due to the transition not being smooth.
Although there are negative points to this film opening such as the end not being very clear to the audience with no smooth transition and the sudden change in sound, I think that the integration of the film titles/ credits in the film opening are very good as they fit the theme through the way they are written (e.g. production company looks hand written) and the location of the titles (e.g. on a notebook, on a mirror etc.). This student film will help me with my work by helping me think in a creative way of presenting the film titles because the film titles are integrated into the film by being on props in this film, which I think is creative.
